Get rid of Dandruff Naturally

Winter’s almost there and the cold weather brings in its own set of seasonal woes such as chapped lips, dry skin and unfortunately flaky, white particles we call dandruff.

Dandruff is a condition of accelerated skin life cycle. The skin cell cycle can be reduced to as few as 2-7 days. Suddenly this overproduction of skin cells leads to the embarrassing flakes that are visible in your scalp and on your clothes. There are many natural remedies for dandruff to minimize and control it.

Home remedy for dandruff

Baking soda
Yes, baking soda can help you get rid of dandruff. It is alkaline in nature and helps eliminate dead skin cells by acting as a mild exfoliant. It also helps in controlling oil secretion on the scalp.
You will need:

  • 2 tsp baking soda
  • Few drops of water


  • Wash your hair with warm water.
  • Add a few drops of water in baking soda to form a paste.
  • Apply it on your scalp and massage it for a few minutes.
  • Rinse your hair with plain water or shampoo.

Other home remedies you can try: Salt water, aspirin, Tea Tree oil, Vinegar.

 Brush your hair regularly

The first, and very simple, way to reduce your chances of developing dandruff is to brush your hair more often. If you don’t brush your hair, then the dry flakes of skin will build up in your hair and brushing aids the process of shedding the dead skin cells.

 Lime wash

Another good home remedy on how to get rid of dandruff naturally is to use lime or lemon wash. Boil the peels of five limes (or lemons) in water and then, allow the solution to cool. Use the solution as a rinse after each shampoo and, if you keep on using this treatment, twice a week, you should start to see a reduction in your dandruff.

Olive oil

One of our favorite beauty ingredients, olive oil, also gets a mention here. Gently warm some olive oil in a pan, not too hot though, and then, massage it into your hair and scalp, leave on for, at least, a couple of hours or overnight before washing off. This treatment is especially effective, if you have dandruff, combined with generally dry skin as well.

Black pepper powder and yogurt

Mix together one teaspoon of black pepper powder with a cup of natural, plain yogurt and massage it into your hair and scalp, and leave on for approximately half an hour. The yoghurt will smooth and nourish your scalp, while the pepper will fight any fungal infections.

Apple juice

Another good tip on how to get rid of dandruff naturally is to use apple juice. Fresh apple juice is a great way to remove the accumulation of dead skin cells from your scalp. Just juice one or two apples and rinse your hair with the juice, then leave it on your hair for about ten minutes before rinsing out again with warm water.

Fenugreek seed

A slightly longer term, but longer lasting treatment for dandruff is Fenugreek Seed. You will need to soak the seeds in water, preferably overnight, to make them soft and then, you can crush them up into a paste, which you can apply to your hair. Again, you then apply the paste to your hair and leave it on for around twenty minutes, before washing out.

Apple cider vinegar

Vinegar has long been recommended as a good treatment for dandruff. It contains active enzymes that help to fight the causes of an itchy scalp and flaky skin. You can massage apple cider vinegar directly into your scalp, or if you prefer use a mixture of apple cider vinegar and water as a rinse. Then wash out again and you will still gain the benefits, without the lingering smell!


Mouthwash is one of the most effective remedies for dandruff. Mix some water with mouthwash at a ratio of 1:10 and apply on the hair, making sure you covered the entire scalp. Do the procedure once a month and you will notice an impressive improvement in the condition.

Tea tree oil

Tea tree oil is one of the oils that everyone with skin issues should have at home. Just add 5 drops of tea tree oil to your shampoo and mix well. The effect of tea tree oil will be visible in a few weeks.

Olive oil

Olive oil is a favorite ingredient for both hair and skin care. Rub 2-3 tbs. olive oil in the scalp before bedtime. Cover with a bath hat and towel. Leave it for the night and wash your hair in the morning.

 Hot towel therapy

Hot towel therapy, sounds little professional again, right ? Now, what all you need to do is to take your towel and place it in boiling water. Let it soak for a while. Then take it out and wait for a while until the towel become warm ( because too hot can lead to some hair problems ).

Eat a lot of protein

Protein is the building obstruct for sound hair. Having an eating regimen that is exceptionally rich in protein will enable your hair to become speedier.

Coconut oil

Coconut oil penetrates deep into the epidermis and works from within.Simply wash your hair with shampoo and let your hair dry completely. Do not use a conditioner.Apply the coconut oil directly to your scalp and leave it on for a few minutes.Wash your hair thoroughly with water.
